"New Year's Resolutions" – a Bunch of CRAP or Do They Actually Make Sense?

Posted on 04. Jan, 2009 by tamicks in Random

Since I’m way too tired and lazy to think of something to post, I’m just going to make this a very short post.

A new year is here and there are some of us out there who still believe in making a “New Year’s Resolution”, but let me beg you to just take the time to reflect on all the things that we have learned for 2008. We make these resolutions and they go forgotten by the third week into the year. I know so many people who make resolutions for the new year, but then they never follow through. Some of the most common ones are:

  • Spend more time with family and friends.
  • Stop going out so often, and try to save some money.
  • Exercise more often.
  • Cut down on (or quit) their alcohol consumption/smoking.
  • etc.

Personally, I think that new year resolutions are crap, because why should you wait until the new year in order to better yourself and your life? Why procrastinate? Why not do it now? If I have any resolution for the new year, then it will simply be to stay alive and hope to see another year. All my other plans, goals and aspirations are not going to be on hold until January 1st, but rather, I get to work on them as soon as I can.

Anyway, that is just my opinion. I suppose that there are other people out there who make these resolutions and actually STICK to them. If you are one of those people, then I truly admire you. So, what do you do? Are you the type of person who makes resolutions for the new year? Do you stick to them, or do you forget about them by the beginning of February? OR are you like me and don’t really indulge in the whole resolutions thing? Don’t worry … its okay to disagree with me :)

Well I think “New Years Resolution” is one way wherein so many promises himself to change for the better. But it has no proven positive effect every year that comes. I’m hoping that for those who have their resolutions… “Walk your talk” be true to yourself!!!

More Power for everyone this 2009.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Why put off something important for tomorrow – a day that you are not guaranteed; why put off bettering yourself until the following year? I have made resolutions but I have never waited for a whole new year. I go through a day and if I don’t like something I decide to change it or at least work on it the very next day. Maybe it’s as a result of my impatience, or maybe, it’s just my work ethic being transfered to every area of my life, but whatever it is I’m sure it’s for the good cuz I make myself better everyday and not every year. Thus, I grow everyday. We should live everyday like it’s our last but within certain boundaries. Tomorrow is not promised so if there is something you need to do cuz you think it’s gonna help you see tomorrow then do it today.

I agree. Resolutions, or res-illusions as I like to call them, are just an excuse for people to create the fantasy that they’ll actually do something with their lives. Why should the turn of a dial make your life any different? Honestly.

I am not very big on resolution, i’m the type who, the minute i see something that i want to change and decide to do something about it, i don’t wait for the new year, i just do it immediately.

But i guess different people need different motivations.

honestly…i have no problems with people who make new year’s resolutions. My thing is that by the time the new year rolls around I already have enough things on my plate to take me to the other year. So i dont make new resolutions, I just strengthen the ones that I had before. however I did make two last year and they came thru mainly because I wrote them down and I also had other people who knew about it and could keep me inline…

I agree that resolutions are crap, but only if they are written without true focus. If you’re going to make a change, you should write the steps that will help you quantify your journey and help you know where you are in attaining that goal. For example, if you want to lose weight you can’t just write “I’m going to lose weight this year” you should probably write “I’m going to lose 30 lbs. by July 1″ then proceed to make measurable goals to that destination. No, you don’t need to wait until Jan. 1 to make a worthwhile or pertinent goal!
